Analysis of Qualitative Research Trend on Liberal Art Education in Korea

Joungmin Kim

The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of qualitative research related to liberal arts education in Korea to find a research direction in the future. For 51 qualitative studies related to liberal arts published since 2000, the trend of qualitative research in terms of topics, participants, methods, and design was analyzed. As a result of the study, qualitative research related to liberal arts in Korea was remarkable in the form of peer-reviewed study, and the study published in the last 5 years (2016-2020) accounted for 64% of the total, indicating that the recent qualitative study has increased. Based on the Korean Liberal Arts Center's Standard Model (2020), experiential education occupied a majority compared to liberal arts education and basic education including humanities, social studies, and natural sciences. Regardless of the type of study, out of the total 743 studies, 642 were quantitative studies such as student satisfaction and demand. Among various qualitative designs, 42 studies were used as case studies to verify the learning effect through physical experiential classes (sports, dance, yoga, etc.). Of the total 580 study participants, most were university students (439) and professors (104), and the average interview time was about 60 minutes. Most of the data were collected through interviews (75%), and studies that adopt more than one data collection method. In terms of research reliability, 83% cited the rigor of interpretation of the results of the original data. 77% of the studies used oral and written consent to solve the problem of research ethics, In the last five years, 27% of the studies could not find any relevant this issue. Based on these research results, the trend of qualitative research on liberal arts education, various qualitative research methodologies and implications for conducting rigorous qualitative research in the future are presented.
